Public Adjuster FAQ

For more information call Crosscom Public Adjusters 630-871-5500.

  • What is a public adjuster?

A “Public adjuster” is an insurance adjuster who does not work for any insurance company.  They work directly for you to assist in the preparation, presentation, and settlement of the claim.  A “Company adjuster” is an insurance adjuster who is an employee of an insurance company.  They represent the interest of the insurance company and are paid by the insurance company.  They may not have your best interest in mind.  An “Independent adjuster” is an insurance adjuster who is hired on a contract basis by an insurance company to represent the insurance company’s interest in the settlement of the claim.  They are paid by your insurance company.

  • Why should I hire a licensed public adjuster?

Why would you hire an attorney if you had to go to court?  If you were 100% in the right and decided you didn’t need an attorney and the other party is 100% in the wrong but had a respected, highly successful, and well-known attorney, who do you think would win?  When a disaster hits you house or business it can be stressful and overwhelming not to mention extremely time-consuming dealing with your insurance carrier.  How many insurance claims have you had to deal with?  The adjusters that your insurance company sends out may have dealt with hundreds or thousands of claims or he may have just started in the industry.  Either way, you are putting your claim in their hands and remember, they work for your insurance company, not you!  Working with a public adjuster ensures that you have someone on your side that is there to fight for you to maximize your insurance claim.

  • What should a licensed public adjuster do for me?

A public adjuster should access the visible damage to your house or building.  They will then determine if the damage is sufficient to file an insurance claim. If so, they will file the claim on your behalf, meet with your insurance carrier’s adjuster and negotiate the damages and cost to return your structure to its pre-loss condition.  Should the damage affect a commercial business and there is an interruption in your business they will add the business interruption loss of income to the claim.  Should the public adjuster and the insurance adjuster not agree on damage or cost, the public adjuster should prepare an estimate and attach the supporting pictures to request a re-inspection of your property.  If there still is no resolve to the damage or cost of repair, the public adjuster should educate the insured on the next step, the appraisal process.

  • Who should hire a public adjuster?

Any insured that has a considerable loss to their house or building should hire a public adjuster to represent them with their insurance carrier.  Keep in mind that the adjuster that works for your insurance carrier works for THEM, not YOU!  When a catastrophic event happens, (tornado, wind and hailstorm, floods, fires, etc.) many times the insurance adjusters are overwhelmed with the number of claims that they are assigned.  They are usually required to inspect and estimate every claim that they have for that day.  Unfortunately, they are usually doing a quick inspection, then on to the next claim resulting in missing many damaged areas or items.  It is in your best interest to have an adjuster on your side at the beginning process of your claim.

  • When should you hire a public adjuster?

The best time to hire a public adjuster is prior to filing an insurance claim.  With insurance claims, normally, your insurance carrier will only allow two inspections per claim, so you want to make sure that you are properly represented on the first inspection.  A public adjuster can be hired after the initial inspection; however, this only allows the public adjuster an additional inspection.  It is best to have the public adjuster represent you prior to the claim being filed.

  • Once the claim is approved do I have to find contractors to complete the work?

No, we also have our sister companies, Crosscom Property Restoration and Crosscom Roofing to complete the work for you.  Both companies work within the insurance carrier’s estimate and scope of work.  All three companies are under one roof maintaining a seamless connection for you.  By utilizing either companies for your repair, there is no cost for our public adjusting services.

  • Will my premiums be raised, or will my insurance carrier cancel my insurance if I hire a public adjuster?

No, your premiums will not be raised, and you will not be dropped by your insurance carrier by hiring a public adjuster.  If insurance premiums are raised, it’s usually when many claims are being filed in one small area and the entire region’s premiums will go up, not just yours.  While your insurance carrier can choose to non-renew your policy for ANY reason they see fit after your policy period is up, they cannot suddenly drop your coverage because you’ve decided to hire an advocate.  Usually, carriers only drop coverage if you stop paying your premiums or a loss is deemed negligent on your part.

  • If I hire a public adjuster, is that like committing fraud?

Absolutely not!  A good public adjuster is there to advocate for you on your behalf.  They will negotiate the damages and costs to maximize your claim.  Many are under the impression that Public Adjusters somehow defraud insurance carriers into paying out outrageous amounts of money so that they can capitalize on the gain.  Insurance companies are billion-dollar businesses that understand the risks in insurance and speculate on making profits based on the premiums collected.  Public Adjusters build a case for the policyholder using state statutes, building codes and insurance policies and they present it to the insurance carrier.  The insurance company may try to refute the case, much like a trial case.  The two go back and forth negotiating, until a fair settlement is reached.   Public Adjusters must pass a state test, get fingerprinted and  go through a security check prior to getting licensed.  Public Adjusters are also regulated by the State Department of Insurance and the Department of Insurance Director.  Public adjusters and the public adjuster company must also maintain bonds regulated by the state.
